India went a step closer to qualification for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup after Sunil Chhetri’s 83rd international goal and an injury-time goal by Sahal Abdul Samad helped the Indian football team seal a 2-1 win against Afghanistan in the third round match in Kolkata on Saturday.

Chhetri scored his third goal of the tournament to take India 1-0 up — a brilliant free-kick in the 87th minute which took him to 83 international goals. In the 88th minute, an unmarked Nadiem Amiri put the ball in to pull the visitors level. India pressed back immediately and prevailed when Sahal Samad put the hosts ahead again.

Chhetri now stands sixth on the list of all-time goal scorers, and second among current international footballers, after Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, who has 117 to his name.

After this win, India are ranked second in the table, with Hong Kong on top, having six points from as many games with a 100 percent win rate. Afghanistan and Cambodia, the other two members of the group, remain without a point so far.
