HIGHLIGHTS

  • Angelo Mathews finished as highest run-scorer with 344 runs
  • Mushfiqur Rahim was the second-highest run-getter with 303 runs
  • Asitha Fernando finished as highest wicket-taker with 13 wickets

Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews and Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim are among the three nominees for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for May 2022.

Besides Mathews and Rahim, Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando has also been named for the honour.

Mathews played a crucial role during Sri Lanka’s away series win over Bangladesh. He finished as the highest run-scorer with 344 runs in two Tests, including two centuries. The right-hander came close to what could have been his second double-century but he was dismissed for 199 in the first Test. In the second Test, Mathews registered another century and remained unbeaten on 145.

Meanwhile, Rahim finished as the second-highest run-getter with 303 runs during the series. Just like Mathews, Rahim too racked up two centuries against Sri Lanka. He also became the first Bangladesh player to score 5000 Test runs. Rahim achieved the feat during the first Test.

Another Sri Lankan to make the cut is Fernando. The pacer finished as the highest wicket-taker during the series against Bangladesh. Fernando took three wickets in the first Test. In the second Test, though, he returned with 10 wickets.
