  • Australia have named veteran Jon Holland as replacement
  • Mitchell Swepson is expected to retain his spot for the next Test
  • Australia are 1-0 up against Sri Lanka in the 2-match series

Left arm orthodox spinner Ashton Agar has been ruled out of the final Test match of the Test series between Australia and Sri Lanka due to a side strain. The injury is yet another setback for the off spinner, who was primed to partner Nathan Lyon at Galle International Stadium, a venue that traditionally supports finger spin. Veteran off spinner Jon Holland has been lined up as his replacement.

“Agar sustained this injury during the white-ball leg of the tour three weeks ago. Jon Holland, who was part of the Australia A side on the tour, has been named as Agar’s replacement in the 17-man squad,” said the official release from Cricket Australia.

In the absence of Agar, Australia have opted to keep Mitchell Swepson as the main partner of Lyon after his five-fer in the first Test match of the series. Swepson, Lyon and part-timer Travis Head run circles around the Sri Lankan batting line-up and wrapped them up in the 22.5 overs in the second innings.

Pat Cummins praised Swepson after his outing in the last Test match, stating that he was really happy with how the bowler bowled.

“A couple of key breakthroughs in the first innings and then [on Friday], top-order wickets. Really valuable. He controlled the tempo of the game, he had some batters come really hard at him. I thought he bowled beautifully.”

Australia have been in tremendous form in the subcontinent, and have not lost even a single game in the four matches that they have played. The Pat Cummins-led team won against Pakistan 1-0 in a three match series and managed to put up a dominating show against the Lankas who have been good at their home.
