Javed Miandad has heaped praise on skipper Babar Azam for staying cool during Pakistan’s incredible win over Sri Lanka in the first Test.
Ever since the 27-year-old has assumed the role of captaincy, Pakistan cricket has witnessed a change in fortunes. In the 12 Tests Azam has been captain, they have won eight matches, lost two and drawn two. The latest victory came in the recently-concluded Test match against Sri Lanka at Galle.
Azam led the team from the front and scored a brilliant hundred in the first innings to help the visitors to a respectable total. Heroics from Abdullah Shafique in the second innings ensured that Pakistan chased down 342 runs to win the match and take a lead in the series.
Former cricketers have been praising the 27-year-old and the latest to join the group is Miandad. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the Pakistan cricket legend congratulated the team for their joined effort to win the game and hailed Azam for his captaincy. Miandad also praised the star batter for remaining calm during pressure situations.
Miandad pointed out that the 27-year-old’s good form is beneficial for the team as the unit can fail if the captain doesn’t perform to the best of his abilities.
“Team is playing as a combined unit, and the credit goes to our players as well as our no.1 captain. He is our captain cool. He doesn’t lose his temper. He led the team brilliantly. The most important thing is he is performing brilliantly himself. He leads from the front. Often, if a captain doesn’t perform, it can affect the team negatively and it leads to his downfall,” said Miandad.
The Pakistan cricket legend also claimed that Azam should remain as the captain of the side until he retires.
“Babar Azam is mature now. He should be the captain of the team until he retires from the game,” said Miandad.
