  • Leclerc has endured a tough time in recent races
  • The Ferrari driver is currently 49 points behind Max Verstappen
  • Ecclestone said he was hoping for a revival from Ferrari this season

Former Formula One boss Bernie Eccelstone has written off ferrari driver Charles Leclerc’s chances of winning this year’s Driver’s Championship.

Leclerc got off to a dream start this season winning the Bahrain and Australian GPs. However, the past few races haven’t been great for the Monegasque driver. Reliability issues cost him in Barcelona and Azerbaijan as Leclerc was forced to retire while he was leading the leading the races.

Despite being handed a 10-place grid in Canada, the 24-year-old was able to secure a respectable fifth place finish in the race.

Currently, Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez occupy the first two spots in the drivers standings with Leclerc sitting in the third spot. The gap between him and Verstappen is currently 49 points. The Italian team is hoping that their driver can bounce back at Silverstone and cut down the deficit.

Speaking to Swiss newspaper Blick, Eccelstone ruled out the 24-year-old’s chances of winning the championship saying that errors are creeping in again for Ferrari. He also said that the drivers don’t seem confident on the track.

The former F1 boss continued by saying that he was hoping for a revival from Ferrari this season but things aren’t going the team’s way and people betting on the team and Leclerc to win will come out with nothing.

“Errors are creeping in again. The reliability we are seeing is often reminiscent of the old days and the drivers themselves are not always confident on the track. It means Max is having an easy time in the Red Bull with six wins already. Like many people, I had hoped that Ferrari would succeed again after more than 14 years. Unfortunately, I have to say that anyone who continues to put their money on Ferrari or Leclerc will get nothing,” said Eccelstone.
