England can do it better, says captain Jos Buttler after decimating South Africa in 2nd ODI

Jos Buttler expressed delight with England’s series-leveling victory over South Africa in the 2nd ODI in Manchester on Friday but the skipper maintained that there is much more scope for improvement. England had headed into the ODI series against South Africa on the back of T20I and ODI defeats to India at home. They were humbled in the series opener in Chester-le-Street but the hosts bounced back with a 119-run victory.

England dismissed South Africa for just 83 in a rain-reduced 29-overs-per-side contest after posting 201 runs on the board.

Any advantage South Africa might have had from winning the toss and putting England into bat amid gloomy conditions quickly faded as their top order collapsed.

Three of South Africa’s top four batsmen failed to score and talisman Quinton de Kock went cheaply, for five runs, as England ran riot in their opening four overs, with two wickets for opening bowler Reece Topley and a sharp runout by captain and wicketkeeper Jos Buttler.

“Delighted with the win, the guys played in the fashion we want to play with as a team, can we do it better, absolutely. I tell the guys to back themselves, take the risks, impose selves on the opposition,” Buttler said after the. win on Friday.

BUTTLER LAUDS LIVINGSTONE, CURRAN

Meanwhile, the England captain also conceded that the defending world champions haven’t batted well in the recent past in ODI cricket but they are well aware of their firepower in the 50-over format of the game.

“We haven’t fired with the bat in white-ball cricket but we know how dangerous we can be when we do,” he added, heaping praise on Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran for their quickfire knocks.

“Me and Liam tried to get a rebuild going, Liam and Sam Curran had the bravery to take on the options.”

Livingstone top scored for England with 38, contributing in a brisk 43-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Sam Curran as they hauled the hosts from 101-6 to 144-7.

Livingstone hit three successive sixes and then a four in the 21st over off the bowling of Anrich Nortje, who had the last laugh when he then bowled a slower ball to see Livingstone haul out to midwicket.

Curran made 35 off 18 balls before picking up the crucial wicket of David Miller with the ball.

England and South Africa will meet in the ODI series decider in Leeds on Sunday.
