America’s Coco Gauff has stormed into the semi-final of the French Open 2022 after beating Sloane Stephens 7-5, 6-1 in the quarter-final match at Phillippe-Chatrier.
The 18-year-old scaled a new height in her career after progressing to her main Grand Slam semi-final at Roland Garros. Gauff had to strain a wee bit in the first set after Stephens made her work hard. But she held her nerve to seal the deal.
At the start of the second set, Stephens broke Gauff’s serve, but the latter returned the favour in the very next game. From there on, Gauff didn’t look back and went on to show her dominance. She made a double fault while being on the threshold of victory, but gathered herself soon.
In fact, Gauff made as many as six double faults only to make incredible recoveries. She produced 16 winners and broke her opponent’s serve six out of 10 times. After the match, Gauff said how delighted she was following her maiden Grand Slam semi-final appearance.
In another quarterfinal match, Italy’s Martina Trevisan defeated Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in straight sets. The 19-year-old Fernandez suffered from injuries during her game, but failed to make enough recovery to stage a comeback.
Trevisan will now face Gauff in the semi-final of the women’s singles in the French Open 2022. Trevisan also qualified for her maiden Grand Slam semis. It remains to be seen who among the two makes it through to the final of the clay court tournament at Roland Garros.
