Canada’s Leylah Fernandez was struck with awe after she played her first round match of the French Open 2022 against France’s Kristina Mladenovic. On Sunday, May 22, the 19-year-old made a winning start to the tournament at Roland Garros after defeating Mladenovic 6-0 7-5.

Fernandez, who finished as the runner-up in the 2021 US Open after losing to Britain’s Emma Raducanu, managed to dominate despite the local crowd showing their support for Mladenovic.

Fernandez won the first set without dropping a single game. In the second, Mladenovic threatened to make a comeback, but the Canadian star showed her experience and won the match.

The Montreal-born teenager said that the atmosphere during the game was similar to that of a football match. Fernandez said that instead of letting pressure get the better of her, she enjoyed her game to the fullest.

HAVE FUN ON COURT

“Honestly, it was very difficult but I’m very happy that I was able to play against such a crowd, because I always had the dream of having a crowd against myself,” Fernandez was quoted as saying in a press conference.

“Having that experience of the French crowd that was chanting, shouting, it was a great experience, like a football match,” he stated.

“I just tried to think about my game and to have fun on the court because it’s not every day you have such an atmosphere. I’m very happy to have lived such a match,” Fernandez added.

After getting past Mladenovic without having to break much sweat, Fernandez will lock horns with four-time Grand Slam doubles champion Katerina Siniakova in the second round on Wednesday, May 25.
