Canadian star Leylah Fernandez has been knocked out of the French Open 2022. On Tuesday, May 31, the 19-year-old tennis player lost 2-6, 7-6 (7) 3-6 to Italy’s Martina Trevisan at Court Phillippe-Chatrier.
Trevisan, who is currently ranked 59th in the world, made Fernandez work hard in the first set where she dominated throughout. During this while, Leylah also got treatment from her physiotherapist while she tried to recover from niggles.
Fernandez gave her opponent a run for her money in the second set and took it into the tie-breaker where she came up trumps. The third was all about Fernandez trying to play catch-up. After she went 1-5 down, the writing was pretty much on the walls for the young player.
But Leylah won two games in a row to keep her hopes alive of a comeback. At 40-30 in the ninth game, Leylah was wrong-footed as Trevisan produced a winner to secure victory.
Trevisan was outstanding as she won seven out of 14 break points and churned out 43 winners. The fact that Leylah made 44 unforced errors didn’t help her by any stretch of the imagination. Trevisan made as many as seven double faults, but made up for the same with some excellent tennis.
Fernandez’s approach to playing volley shots went against her as Trevisan trumped her with 15 passing shots. Trevisan, in the meantime, scaled a new height in her career after qualifying for her maiden Grand Slam semis.
Trevisan will now face the winner of the quarter-final match between America’s Coco Gauff and Sloane Stephens.
