  • Pant led India’s charge with bat in the second innings
  • The wicketkeeper’s 89 secured the historic win for India
  • Siraj revealed the whole team was nervous when Pant went to bat

Ajinkya Rahane has revealed that he told Rishabh Pant to play out the 15 minutes before tea during India’s historic win at the Gabba in 2021.

The series was all level at 1-1 heading into the final test and India’s hopes were pinned on Pant as they had to chase down 328 runs on the final day to win.

The Delhi batter walked in to the crease after Rahane’s wicket fell and the score was 167 for 3. The latter has now revealed in the docuseries, Bandon Mein Tha Dum, what he told Pant as he was entering the field.

The stand-in skipper at the time said he told the wicketkeeper to see off the session before tea as there were only 15 minutes left. Rahane claimed that he even adviced Pant to ‘lie on the pitch’ if he wanted to and told him he would not give him any further instructions after tea.

“When I was going back to the dressing room, Rishabh Pant was coming in. I just told him, 15 minutes are left for tea, play these 15 minutes somehow, stay at the pitch, if you want to lie down, do that. I won’t tell you anything after tea,” said Rahane.

Indian pacer Mohamed Siraj also revealed that the entire team was nervous when Pant walked in to bat at the Gabba.

“When Rishabh went out to bat, we were all nervous,” said Siraj.

Eventually, Pant led India’s charge with the bat and they chased down the target to win the test and the series 2-1. The defeat was also Australia’s first one at the Gabba in 32 years.

He scored a fine 89 runs, which consisted of nine boundaries and a six. The wicketkeeper was also given the Man Of The Match award for his incredible knock that got India home.
