IND vs SA: Temba Bavuma hails explosive duo of Miller and Rassie after record chase for South Africa

South Africa chased down a mammoth target of 212 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Thursday, 9 June. A record chase at the Delhi ground, as well as in South Africa’s T20I history as well, the win helped the visitors stamp their authority in the series.

The victory was paved by a stoke-filled outing for David Miller who continued his Gujarat Titans’ role of a finisher in the Protea colours, alongside Rassie van der Dussen. Despite losing the way midway through the innings, Temba Bavuma’s men downed a target of 126 runs in the final 10 overs to etch a very important victory in a tricky surface at Kotla, which seemed to help spin and pace at the same time in the initial overs of the game.

Speaking at the post match presentation, Bavuma spoke about the same and gave credit to a struggling Ishan Kishan for surviving the first few overs.

“We expected the wicket to get better as the night went on. Fortunately, the batting came through. Bit tricky to assess the bowling. It was fair considering how good that wicket was. He (Ishan Kishan) made it look very easy. They put us under pressure when our spinners were bowling. Always had a left-right combo that didn’t allow us to settle. proper batting display.”

The wicket became easy to bat on as the night progressed and David Miller’s clean hitting capability took over the game.

“David carried his form and well supported by Rassie. Just need to build from this performance. It was a good wicket, probably we can read the situation a bit better, especially the spinners. I am being overly critical because the pitch was good. We will take that result. We have a lot of belief in Rassie. We have seen him do that time and time again where he kind of starts slowly and then finds a way to bring it back at the end. He is a guy we can see as a finisher in our team. Him partnering with David does make batting explosive,” Bavuma spoke highly about the duo who were on song in the final five overs of the game.

Nearing 40 degrees on Thursday, Delhi’s weather in the evening acted like a furnace for the visitors. Asked about how they dealt with the heat, Bavuma said that the camp had to cut down on training ahead of the game to keep their players fresh.

“It was hot but wasn’t so humid. Cut down on some training and make sure everyone is fit,” he concluded.

The contingent will now travel to Cuttak, Odisha for their second T20I match, scheduled to be held on 12 June.
