India vs South Africa: Fans disappointed after Rahul Tripathi left out of 18-member squad for T20I series

Rahul Tripathi has been on the Indian domestic circuit for as long as 12 years, but he is yet to don the national jersey. The now 31-year-old first hogged the headlines after he scored heavily for the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant, led by Steve Smith.

Thereafter, he moved to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), where he played under the captaincy of Eoin Morgan and Dinesh Karthik. Ahead of the 2022 mega auction back in February, the Men in Gold and Purple released him and the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), led by Kane Williamson, roped him in.

Tripathi didn’t flatter to deceive for the Orange Army by any stretch of the imagination. In his first 13 matches in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, the right-hander scored 393 runs at an average of 39.30 and a strike rate of 161.72 with three half-centuries to show for his efforts.

Earlier, former Australian batter Matthew Hayden also backed Tripathi to play for Team India at the highest level. But recently, the rub of the green didn’t go Tripathi’s way as the Indian selectors didn’t pick him for the five-match T20I series against South Africa in the month of June.

On Sunday, May 22, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named an 18-member squad and gave national call-ups to Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh. Dinesh Karthik also made his comeback after three years, but Tripathi didn’t have luck going his way.

The fans, in the meantime, weren’t happy after Tripathi failed to find a spot in the T20I squad. The social media users reckoned that Tripathi has played well enough of late to earn a national call-up.
