World No.9 Lakshya Sen faced a shock defeat to HS Prannoy in the first round of the Indonesia Open 2022 on Wednesday, June 15. Prior to the match, Sen had defeated his opponent both times in the previous meetings in 2022. However, Prannoy managed to turn the tables.
Prannoy won the match 21-10, 21-9 in straight sets. To the surprise of many, Sen failed to put Prannoy under any sort of pressure as the latter dominated throughout. Sen won the Thomas Cup to script history, but was knocked out of the Indonesia Masters having reached the quarterfinals.
Prannoy churned out some stupendous returns and smashes and Sen was clueless about them. Despite his recent performances, Sen looked out of touch.
On Day 1 of the tournament, Sai Praneeth and PV Sindhu, the two-time Olympic gold medallist, lost. For the time being, Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth are India’s best bet to win a medal in the championship.
