Former India coach Ravi Shastri took the delivery of his restored Audi 100 that he had won at the 1985 Benson and Hedges World Championship of Cricket in Australia.

Shastri came up with an all-round effort as India went on to win the World Championship, 2 years after winning the 1983 World Cup in England. Shastri was eventually awarded the Player of the Series award and the India all-rounder returned home with a brand new sedan.

Ravi Shastri has often said that the Audi remains his prized possession and how he still manages to use it for Sunday morning drives.

The keys of the restored vehicle were handed over to Shastri by Gautam Singhania, owner of SCCG and the chairman and managing director of Raymond Group, at a special event on Friday.

“This [the Audi 100] is special in many ways, it is one of the first Audis to ever come into India,” the former India coach said.

“It is definitely a car that made me, my team, and the whole country proud,” he added. In a tweet, Shastri called the Audi 100 a “national asset”.

“There were about 10,000 people at the docks just to see the car. I was so nervous to drive it that I asked one of the Audi officials to drive it home for me,” he said.

Shastri used the car for a long time until sourcing the parts for it became difficult. The car has been restored to its original state with the same paint and interior upholstery.

“When the car got here, it was not working in any respect,” Singhania said. The restoration team had to completely strip the car and rebuild it from scratch.

“However, with painstaking efforts, we were able to get the car back on the road,” Singhania said.

On seeing the restored car, Shastri exclaimed, “This looks like the car I won!”
