HIGHLIGHTS

  • Umran Malik was one of SRH’s standout pacers in IPL 2022
  • Malik was recently called up for the T20I series against South Africa
  • Pakistan are set to play against West Indies in three ODIs

Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi said that Umran Malik needs to show more accuracy to taste consistent success at the highest level. Malik was exceptional for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 as he regularly generated speeds in excess of 150 km/h.

He also picked up a five-wicket haul against the Gujarat Titans (GT), although his valiant efforts went in vain. Afridi, who made his debut for Pakistan back in 2018, said that it’s tough for a bowler to flourish with only speed in his/her armoury.

“Speed can’t help you if you don’t have line and length and swing,” Shaheen was quoted as saying to the reporters.

Pakistan are set to lock horns with West Indies in a rescheduled ODI series against the West Indies. The series was scheduled to happen last year, but had to be postponed due to the emergence of Covid cases in the visitors’ camp.

Ahead of the matches at Multan Cricket Stadium, Afridi said that his team is up for the challenge of playing in hot and humid conditions. The speedster is also wary of the threat that West Indies pose in limited-overs cricket.

“The weather is hot but we are looking forward to playing good cricket in it. It would be a tough challenge for the fast bowlers to bowl long spells in summer, but as a professional, we are ready to face it,” he stated.

“This is an important series in terms of World Cup qualification, which is why we don’t want to lose any match. Also, West Indies are a strong international side and it is not as if they are sending under-19 players for this series,” Shaheen added.
