HIGHLIGHTS

  • In October 2021, Pakistan beat India by 10 wickets
  • India and Pakistan will next face each other on October 23
  • Akhtar asked India to make their team selection carefully

Former fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar said that India should be careful while picking their team in their T20 World Cup 2022 match against Pakistan later this year. On Sunday, October 23, the arch rivals are set to face each other in the high-voltage match at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

When the two sides last met in October 2021, Babar Azam’s Men in Green thrashed the Men in Blue by 10 wickets at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Mohammad Rizwan, Shaheen Shah Afridi and skipper Babar made sure that Pakistan won the match without having to break much sweat.

“India cannot go about and select a random team against Pakistan without defining their roles. I think, the management should select the team carefully and I fully believe it will be a solid team. It won’t be a walkover for Pakistan this time around,” Akhtar was quoted as saying to Sportskeeda.

“If India pick the right squad for the tournament, then they have a very good chance of beating Pakistan. They are absolutely even teams at the moment, so it is very difficult to predict a result,” he stated.

Akhtar also said that it would be better off for Pakistan if they bat first and set a formidable target for India to chase down in their upcoming World Cup encounter. Moreover, the Rawalpindi Express admitted that the iconic venue in Melbourne is likely to be filled with more Indian supporters than Pakistan’s.

“The wicket at the MCG plays quite well. Bowling second would be ideal for Pakistan to win the match against India. There will be a crowd of 100,000, out of which 70,000 will be supporting India, so, the pressure will be on Pakistan,” Akhtar added.

Barring the match last year in Dubai, India have won all their World Cup matches against Pakistan.
