  • Harmanpreet Kaur scored 44 runs in India’s run-chase

Deepti Sharma played a crucial role as India took a crucial 1-0 lead in the Women’s ODI series against Sri Lanka. On Friday, July 1, Sharma put forth an all-round show and helped the Women in Blue win by four wickets.

Sharma was India’s standout bowler after she picked up three wickets and bowled at an economy rate of three. Thereafter, she came back to score a vital 41-ball 22 and was also involved in a 38-run partnership with Pooja Vastrakar.

After India were asked to chase down 173, they found themselves in a hole after being reduced to 138 for six in 30 overs. Even as the required run-rate wasn’t a concern for the visiting team in Pallekele, not having enough wickets in hand definitely was.

Left-arm spinner Inoka Ranaweera picked up four wickets and put India under immense pressure. Right-arm tweaker Oshadi Ranasinghe picked up two wickets and lent Ranaweera support.

After losing three early wickets, India made a recovery through Harleen Deol and Harmanpreet Kaur’s 62-run stand for the fourth wicket. Even as Kaur scored 44, Harleen made a quick-fire 34.

Earlier, Shafali Verma took India off to a decent start with a 35-run knock, but the left-handed duo of Smriti Mandhana and Yastika Bhatia flattered to deceive.

As far as Sri Lanka are concerned, after their star batter Chamari Athapaththu got out, Hasini Perera, Harshitha Samarawickrama and Nilakshi de Silva steadied the ship. The hosts were eventually bowled out for 171 in 48.2 overs.

Apart from Deepti, fast bowler Renuka Singh also accounted for three scalps, including that of the dangerous Athapaththu.

The second ODI will take place on Monday, July 4 in Pallekele.
