Mumbai Indians’ (MI) Suryakumar Yadav has set his goal for the Indian Premier League 2023. The top-order batter not only wants to bring his team back to winning ways, but clinch the coveted trophy next year.
The Mumbai-based franchise has won the cash-rich tournament five times, becoming the most successful team in the IPL. However, MI had a season to forget in 2022 as they finished last with only four wins and 10 defeats. Mumbai lost eight consecutive matches before ending their losing streak in the ninth game.
In a video shared by Mumbai Indians, a disheartened Suryakumar said, “We’ve to lift the sixth (trophy) anyhow. It’s unfortunate that it can’t happen this year. Next year, we have to add one more trophy anyhow.”
“He (Dewald Brevis) is new to the set-up, so he should understand. They are explaining to him what it takes to lift that trophy, which is good.
Suryakumar had an impressive individual season with the bat. Although he missed the initial games due to finger injury, when he joined he left no stone unturned to shoulder the responsibilities. He, however, missed the last few matches due to an injury to his forearm.
Suryakumar is undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, and thus he will miss the upcoming home T20I series against South Africa.
The Mumbai Indians failed to field a stable combination, with continuous changes made to the line-up. MI were the first team to crash out of the playoffs race as they were plagued by injuries, inconsistency, poor form and unsuccessful auction strategy.
The likes of Kieron Pollard and Ishan Kishan failed to live up to their fans’ expections, while Jasprit Bumrah was unable to make an impact for most of the tournament.
Mumbai Indians finished off their IPL 2022 campaign on a high as they not only defeated Delhi Capitals in their final league game but knocked them out of the playoffs race as well. Delhi’s elimination paved the way for Royal Challengers Bangalore to qualify for the knockout stage.
