Right-handed batter Luke Wright, on Sunday, June 19, became the first batter to reach the 5000-run mark in the history of the T20 Blast. The 37-year-old accomplished the milestone during Sussex’s South Group match against Glamorgan at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff.

Opening the batting with Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan, Wright scored 46 runs off 35 balls with the help of eight fours. To his dismay, he didn’t quite get much support from the other batters as Sussex ended with 149/8 after being put in to bat first.

Glamorgan won the match by four wickets after chasing the target down with an over to spare. Prior to the match, Wright was 20 runs short of the feat and he got to it without much fuss.

The veteran has scored 5026 runs from 180 matches at an average of 32.84 and a strike rate of 148.47 with five centuries and 30 half-centuries to show for his efforts.

Back in 2004, Wright made his debut in the T20 Blast and he is still going all guns blazing even after 18 years. In 344 T20 matches, the Lincolnshire-born cricketer has scored 8526 runs with seven centuries and 46 half-centuries to his name.

In the ongoing T20 Blast, Wright has notched 158 runs from eight matches at an average and strike rate of 19.75 and 129.50 respectively.

During his heyday, Wright was an effective cricketer for England as he played 50 ODIs and 51 T20Is in his career. He also has 79 T20 wickets to his name at an economy rate of 8.54.
