HIGHLIGHTS

  • Rafael Nadal’s Calender Slam dream shattered upon withdrawal from Wimbledon
  • Nick Kyrgios received a walkover to final where he will meet Novak Djokovic
  • Rafael Nadal had won the Australian Open and French Open earlier this year

The 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal thanked members of Wimbledon staff upon his departure from the Championships.

The 36-year-old Spaniard had withdrawn from the tournament on the eve of his semi-final match against Australian Nick Kyrios due to an abdominal tear.

Nadal suffered the injury during his quarter-final match against Taylor Fritz. In spite of taking a medical break twice due to excessive pain, Nadal went on to beat Fritz in a five-set marathon 3-6, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, 7(10)-6(4) on July 6.

Ahead of his departure, Nadal went on to thank staff members of the tournament.

A dejected champion, whose Calender Slam dreams shattered upon pull out, said in a press conference: “Even if I tried a lot of times during my career to keep going under very tough circumstances, in that one I think it’s obvious that if I keep going the injury is going to be worse and worse.

“I made my decision because I believe that I can’t win two matches under these circumstances. I can’t serve. It’s not only that I can’t serve at the right speed, it’s that I can’t do the normal movement to serve.”

Australia’s Kyrgios received a walkover to the final after Nadal withdrew from Wimbledon. He will face Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, who is chasing his fourth successive title at the Championships.

Nadal had won the Australian Open and French Open earlier this year, leading his majors count by two against Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
