  • Mustafizur Rahman has been reluctant to play Test cricket
  • Shakib Al Hasan was reappointed as Test captain last month
  • Bangladesh and West Indies will play 2-Test match series

Bangladesh Test captain Shakib Al Hasan said that teammate Mustafizur Rahman should not be forced into playing Test cricket, and any decision he takes in the long term should be respected.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) added Mustafizur to the squad for the two-Test match series against West Indies, beginning June 16, in spite of him being reluctant to play Tests. The left-arm pacer, who last played a Test match against West Indies in 2021, had stressed the need to choose formats in order to stretch his international career.

However, Mustafizur agreed to play Test cricket again after BCB sent him a letter to clear his position, Cricbuzz reported.

“There is nothing to motivate. Because if Mustafizur prefers, that he wants to play one-day or T20 then I think we should respect that,” Shakib said on the eve of the first Test.

“As he is in the series and I am sure he is motivated to play these two matches and that is important for us. As a captain I am focused with these two matches and he looked very motivated to play these two matches.

“But in the long term I am not sure what is in store and whether he wants to play Test or not but I think every player has individual preferences and choices and there is something like comfort zone and we must respect that.”

Shakib was reappointed as Test captain last month after Mominul Haque stepped down due to his poor form. Bangladesh and West Indies will play two Tests, followed by three T20Is and three ODIs.
