- Shai Hope’s hundred powered West Indies to a strong score of 311
- Axar Patel was the hero for India as his 35-ball 64 helped them cross the line
India captain Shikhar Dhawan reserved special praise for the team as they clinched the series win over West Indies on Sunday in a nail-biting finish.
A magnificent hundred from Shai Hope powered the hosts to a strong score of 311 for six in their allotted 50 overs. In response, India started off slowly and were in a spot of bother when Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson came together. The duo put on a great partnership that changed the complexion of the game.
While West Indies did make a comeback into the game, an incredible 35-ball 64 from Axar Patel ensured that the visitors got over the line and clinched the series.
Speaking at the post-match presentation, Dhawan expressed his happiness with the team performance, saying that despite the mistakes, the players took on the challenge and had self-belief.
The skipper also praised India’s domestic cricket and the IPL for keeping them ready for such big occasions. Dhawan commented on Patel’s brilliant knock, saying that it was amazing and also congratulated West Indies batter Hope for his fine hundred.
“I feel it was a great team performance. We made mistakes, we took the challenge and we had self-belief. I was also surprised. Hats off to our middle order. All the batters were amazing. Axar and Avesh, who got those boundaries, were amazing. Our domestic and IPL cricket keeps us ready as we play in front of big crowds. As Axar said, he’s done it multiple times in IPL. That brings a big stage.”
“At the halfway stage, we felt we pulled them. We got a couple of wickets, then Hope and Pooran took off. We thought we can do it if they can. We started slowly, I thought we can take off against left arm spin. I got out, Shreyas and Sanju played well. There was a silly mistake with the run out. But the way Axar played was amazing. Our support staff has been excellent. (On Hope) It was great when I scored a 100 on my 100th match. Congrats to Hope on doing it, he’s a quality player. He’s got a bright present and future with West Indies,” said Dhawan.
