American legend Serena Williams is set to return to the tour after a year’s absence. The 23-time Grand Slam champion will compete at the Eastbourne International WTA 500 tournament and Wimbledon.
Williams will partner Ons Jabeur in the women’s doubles at Eastbourne before entering Wimbledon as a singles wild card. While some players are excited and a bit scared to face her, Jabeur is hoping that unseeded Willimas draws world number one Iga Swiatek and puts an end to her 35-match winning streak.
“I hope she (draws) Iga,” Jabeur was quoted as saying at Media Day in Eastbourne. “At least someone should stop Iga a little bit.”
The Wimbledon, which will take place from June 27 to July 10, draw will be conducted on Friday. The 2022 edition will be Williams’ first event in nearly 12 months.
The 40-year-old’s last match came at the 2021 Wimbledon, where she was forced to retire with an injury while playing against Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the first round.
Meanwhile, Jabeur said that she is not sure what made Williams choose her as her partner at Eastbourne. The Tunisian was initially scheduled to play singles at the event but will now only focus on doubles with Williams.
“She (Williams) is such an inspiration and the fact that we’re playing doubles together. It’s huge news for me and it’s unbelievable,” Jabeur said.
“I honestly never expected her to pick me or even to play doubles after a long time, but I feel like I’m going way back and all the memories of watching her win a lot of grand slams. I hope it’s not going to make me too nervous, standing next to her.”
Jabeur and Williams will take on Marie Bouzkova and Sara Sorribes Tormo in their first-round match on Tuesday (June 21).
