HIGHLIGHTS

  • On Monday, Trailblazers lost to Supernovas by 49 runs
  • Mandhana scored a well-made 23-ball 34
  • The Trailblazers will next face Velocity on Thursday

Trailblazers’ skipper Smriti Mandhana said that losing wickets in clusters didn’t help her team against the Supernovas in the opening match of the Women’s T20 Challenge on Monday, May 23 at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Pune.

After being asked to 164, the Trailblazers made an impressive start courtesy of a 39-run partnership between Mandhana and Hayley Matthews. But from there on, the Trailblazers lost their way to a large extent and managed to score only 113/9, thereby losing the match by 49 runs.

Mandhana, who scored a 23-ball 34 at the top order, reckoned that her team needed to rotate the strike more often to put the bowlers under pressure. However, she also praised the bowlers for not allowing the Supernovas batters to run away with the match.

COME BACK STRONGER

“Definitely not the result we wanted, we did well to restrict them to 160. On the batting, we were on course to chase it but lost too many wickets, that’s something we need to work on. We were at par with them till the 9th over, but lost track. We need to take more singles and doubles, that is something that is underrated,” Mandhana was quoted as saying.

“I told the bowlers the wicket is good and the outfield is quick, so the message was they shouldn’t panic even if they go for runs. We need to think about the batting line-up, with the rest we will come back stronger in the next game,” she added.

The Trailblazers will next face Deepti Sharma’s Velocity in their must-win encounter on Thursday, May 26 in Pune. They are currently placed at the bottom of the points table with a net run rate of -2.450.
